It also is referred to as a DBA, or doing business as name, fictitious name, or assumed name. Trade Names and Copyrights Trade names are bedrngnis officially protected under copyright law, so someone could start a record label using the same name as yours. As the SBA puts it, A trade name does not afford any brand protection or provide you with unlimited rights for the use of that name. That might sound a little scary, but most record labels will not meet the requirements for qualifying for a trademark. A trademark is a branding of a service or product that you can p rove to be unique from what other companies are offering. There is very little room to do that as a record label. Unless youve invented a new recording technique or invented a different way for pressing physical album copies, your record label isnt doing anything unique. However, just because you probably wont be able to trademark your record label name doesnt mean there arent things you can do to keep your label branding strong. Obviously, youll have a website with a domain name that matches your label name as closely as possible, but it might be worth buying a few domain names that are really close, like the .net or .org versions. Build a Unique Brand Have a label logo and a distinct set of catalog numbers for your products. Always promote your label along with your new releases and create social media accounts with your unique logo and personality or voice. Whats more, get your artists to be brand ambassadors who represent the face of your label. Make building your record lab els identity a priority in case someone else does come along and think up the same name or tries to infringe on your success by choosing a similar name. The more established you are, the less likely someone is going to be successful with the idea of ripping off your name. Anyone serious about establishing their own business will realize that they are much better off building their own label brand. Applying for a Trademark While trade names are not protected under copyright law, other intellectual property, such as company logos, can be protected as a trademark. For example, the script Coca-Cola with extended lines coming from both Cs is a company logo that is trademarked. In the event that you are going to apply for a trademark for your company logo, understand the proper steps to take. Applications can be filed online relatively quickly at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website. Before filling out the paperwork, you should search the USPTOs database to ma ke sure no other companies have already trademarked a similar logo. You also must determine your basis for filing, which means determining if you are seeking to protect property that already is in use in commerce or if you are seeking to protect property that you have an intent to use. Note that intent is defined as more than just a preliminary idea. It should be market ready. Depending on which basis you choose, youll be expected to provide dates for when the protected property first was used. From there, you should be prepared to fill out the paperwork online, but working with an attorney is highly recommended when going through the process. The USPTO will likely take several months to approve or deny your application. They were invisible from below, lost in the grandeur of the larger view.I broke down my goal into small steps to be taken one at a time. Start backwards from your goalThis discipline helps us think about the obst acles that well meet along the way. It helps us to think about the barriers well need to break, customers well need to contact, or product we need to refine if we want to be successful.Most of us start with the goal we want to achieve, and while this can give us vision, it often does nothing to help us understand and acknowledge the challenges well meet along the way. Vision is vital but once we have that, its helpful to backtrack from that vision to see how we might get tripped up by a variety of things. Ego, competition, complacency- all are factors we need to anticipate so we can recognize them if/when they rear their ugly head.With each step up the mountain with Dad and my brother, I looked around to see how Id be able to descend in a safe and timely manner. It gave me confidence that I knew how to conquer the obstacle in front of me.How To Make It Work For You While it may sound pessimistic at first, always anticipate what can and could go wrong. Work backwards from the best ca se scenario and build in safeguards so youre prepared if things take a turn for the worse.2. Work around your brains limited capacityOur brain cannot remember everything.Recent studiesshow that our working memory capacity is limited to five to seven items. Anything more than that is likely to fall out of our brains memory.If we rely on our memory alone, well stop at every task and and ask ourselves, What am I supposed to do next? This is when we get distracted, get off track, or miss a step. When we break down a larger project into smaller steps, it helps us identify what step we need to take next.Too much information can intimidate as well as inspire. When we create mini-goals, we break big scary goals into achievable steps. This helps us understand all the tasks involved as we tackle the big scary stuff so we can create a timeline to get them done. When we create mini goals we chunk the bigger tasks into smaller ones which allows our brain to make connections.Small steps feel safe . Theyre not overwhelming so once were in action, its easier to plot a path forward.How To Make It Work For You Take a closer look at each goal and see what steps are needed to achieve that specific goal. When you break down a huge project into smaller chunks, you can also experience the smaller joys of achievement and progress. Individual steps should be physically written down on your task list or in a checklist. You can refer back to them when you cant remember what comes next.3. Connect goals to behaviorIt isnt enough to want to achieve. To be successful you need to go one step further and take an honest inventory of what will be required of you to make your goal a reality. Everything else is junk to be discarded on your path to personal success. Often, there is a gap between what we think we give to the world and the w ay others see us.In addition, when we seek the council of others, it can help keep us on track. If youre pressed for time, how much of the work can you assign to others? Think about getting professional assistance if you need it.A timeline can give us clarity which also gives us certainty.After I made it up the mountain, I felt as though I was sitting on top of the world Sophie was there and made us lunch, and then we headed back down. What I learned that day was that its easy to feel overwhelmed when confronted by big scary goals. However, by keeping these steps in mind, you create a way to reach the top.How To Make It Work For You Humans do not like delayed gratification. When we build a timeline, we give ourselves milestones to meet and each one of them can give us the sense of accomplishment we need to remain motivated when we reach them. High School Info Even if you’re fresh out of college and lacking additional educational experience, you shouldn’t include where you went to high school. If anything, an employer might be more impressed if you went to an Ivy League university. But your local high school? Not so much. Skip high school information and start your educational experience with college, technical schools, or the like. 2. References If an employer is interested in you, theyre going to ask you for references. That’s why there’s really no good reason to add in the line, “References available upon request.” Doing so could date your resume- and make you lose out on precious real estate that could be better utilized by adding in extra info in the skills or work experience sections. 3. Personal Info Employers aren’t allowed to ask any personal information during a job interview, so why should you offer it up on your resume? Don’t include your marital status, sexual orientation, religious or political affiliations, social security number, or anything else that doesn’t have a place on your professional resume. 4. Your Age Although you might not explicitly state your age on your resume, there are other ways that you might be revealing how old you actually are. For example, you might include the year you graduated college, or cite job experience that’s well over 30 years old. While employers can’t legally discriminate against a candidate because of their age, that’s not to say that it doesn’t happen. So look through your resume and see if you’ve left any telltale signs of how old you are- and get rid of them. 5. Your Home Address Older resume formats often included a header at the top of the page that had the job seeker’s name, address, and contact info on it. But now, there’s really no reason to include a home address, particularly if you are applying for a remote job. Although some employers might need to know where you live if the job has a location requirement, it’s acceptable to just add the city and state where you reside. Leaving off your address (and other personal info) can also prevent the possibility of identity theft, should your resume wind up where it doesn’t belong. 6. A Career Objective The objective of your job application is simple- you want to get hired! Even though career objectives were popular at one time, they aren’t really necessary anymore. If you feel that you need one (e.g., you’re changing careers), you can always address that issue in your cover letter. 7. Your Current Business Contacts Let’s say that you’re job searching while still employed. Be sure to not list your current job’s contact info (such as your work email or phone number) on your resume. Remember, employers can (and do) peruse your email or potentially have access to your voicemail. If you don’t get fired outright for the offense (you’re using company property to conduct your job search, and most likely on company time, too), it could cause some serious tension between you and your current boss. 8. Your Personal Email Address All job seekers should have at least two email addresses: one for professional purposes, and a personal one. Applying for a job with the email address luv2crochet@gmail.com or yankeefanforlife@yahoo.com doesn’t look professional, and could negatively impact how an employer perceives your job application. So use an email address specifically for job searching; that way you’ll never miss an email from a potential employer for a job interview.

If you are pursuing a career in academia, science or possibly a role abroad, knowing the what, when, why and how of a Curriculum Vitae can be essential. Here are some tips to compose an effective CV.What is a CV? A CV is an overview of a persons experience and academic background for the use in a job application. The CV captures your professional and educational credentials and history in a chronological order. It is reviewed by a hiring authority as an initial step in the hiring process to determine if someones background merits an interview. Why use a CV and how does it compare to a resume? Andrei Kurtuy, a resume and CV writing expert, identified a key difference in a blog he authored in February as static versus dynamic content. A resume should be customized to each role and displays qualifications that are of interest based on a specific role. It should be similar to a marketing document that communicate s value related to a specific audience. A CV, on the other hand, is static. It is a historical document that consistently reflects the same background regardless of the role.Here are some additional ways the two documents differ: Work experience in a CV is typically listed in chronological order while resumes are usually in reverse chronological order. The goal of a CV is to show a comprehensive, detailed progression; a resume emphasizes relevant experience done most recently. CVs do not face the same pressure to be one to two pages. They are comprehensive documents that use as much room as is needed to properly cover your background. How to Come Out as Bisexual at Work - The Muse How to Come Out as Bisexual at Work “I’m glad that you write about being bisexual,” a colleague said to me over beers one recent evening. She shared that she hasn’t been out to anyone at work in years and how that decision had been unintentional, but also made her feel incomplete. “But,” she said, “the way you talk about your sexuality makes me feel like I can be out.” Before that moment, I hadn’t known that my colleague-turned-friend was bisexual. Without even meaning to, without ever knowing she was waiting for it, I’d created space for her to be her, just by being me. My path to being out at work hasn’t always been easy. When I was first hired at one organization, before I was out to anyone there, I was interviewed to be featured in an article for my organization’s publication. As I spoke about how my commitment to social justice was connected to my bisexuality, the interviewer seemed confused. The next day I got an email saying the piece wouldn’t run. Her explanation was flimsy. It felt like an excuse. Coming out in that scenario was certainly a risk and it didn’t exactly go well, but I knew that leaving my sexuality out of the equation felt like leaving a part of myself behind. Without even meaning to, without ever knowing she was waiting for it, I’d created space for her to be her, just by being me. I was disappointed but not entirely surprised. By then I’d accepted that this was sometimes the cost of being out, particularly as a bisexual person. One recent study noted that bisexual+ people- a term referring to the collection of identities that includes bisexual, queer, sexually fluid, and other non-monosexual folks- experience double discrimination from both queer and straight communities. Furthermore, the authors note that bisexual people “are at higher risk for poor mental health outcomes compared to heterosexual as well as lesbian and gay individuals.” The costs of erasure of and discrimination against bisexual+ people in the workplace, to infer from the research, might include a decrease in mental and physical wellness, lowered productivity, high turnover rates, and compromised morale. While many people don’t come out in the workplace, and for good reason, I’ve found that being open about my sexuality has helped me feel more connected to my work and colleagues. If you’re passionate about your organization or your field, you may be spending a significant portion of your time with these people. And I knew that I wanted my colleagues to understand that my bisexuality is a part of me and that being out fuels my work. Since I’ve been out at my most recent job, I’ve listened as co-workers disclosed their sexual identities to me, hosted a queer pride party that my supervisor came to, and felt more fully present at work, even if it makes some conversations more awkward. So yes, coming out as bisexual at work can be risky, but to me it’s totally worth it. And after doing it at 11 different jobs, I’ve learned a few things about what works. Test the Waters If you’re not sure where to begin, you might want to start small. Try indicating your identity in a subtle way to gauge your colleagues’ reactions. One day while I was working at the admissions office of a small liberal arts college, I decided to wear something a little queer. I donned a black button-down tucked into a black skirt and added the stark white tie my new girlfriend had just given me. Trust me, I looked sharp and felt confident. When I got to work, my supervisor stopped me, looked me up and down, and told me how bold my choice was. Sure, it might have been a throwaway comment, but the way he said it made it clear to me that I was under a magnifying glass- and felt like a sign that my sexuality might not be welcome. I decided I wouldn’t be coming out to most of my colleagues, and certainly not to my supervisor, because I didn’t know how safe I was. We have every right to exist in a world where our bisexuality is not just accepted, but celebrated. Sadly, though, that’s not possible in every office. But three years later and two thousand miles away, I stood listening to a co-worker talk about her girlfriend. I had just moved across the country and started working at a small café. I asked my fellow barista about how she met her girlfriend, to which she replied, “The only place to meet lesbians in this town is online.” “Well,” I said, “what if I wanted to meet everybody?” “There’s a setting for that,” she said and continued extolling the virtues of online dating. I had been afraid to come out, but her simple acceptance of my sexuality in this small gesture made me feel safer to tell the other café staff I was bisexual. What I found was a warm and welcoming community of queer and straight folks, all of whom I had been working alongside for weeks in trepidation. We all deserve to live under a glorious rainbow of love and acceptance. We have every right to exist in a world where our bisexuality is not just accepted, but celebrated. Sadly, though, that’s not possible in every office. You probably already know this, but I’m going to reiterate it just in case: It is appropriate, and smart, to decide not to come out at work if you don’t feel safe. Prepare and Practice Versions of Coming Out When you’re coming out at work, you don’t need to prepare a formal statement, but you don’t want to wing it, either. Take the time to think of a few coming out options suited to different audiences or occasions and practice them either on your own or with a trusted friend (who you’re out to!). The Casual Reveal Think of a simple, comfortable way to allude to your sexuality. For example, you can mention your involvement with a bisexual organization. The Clarification If you’re being misidentified as gay or straight on a recurring basis, decide on a quick, clear clarification you feel comfortable using- it can be as simple as, “Oh, actually I’m bisexual.” If you’ve tried the casual reveal or a clarification already and people continue to misidentify you, you may want to say more strongly, “Actually, I’m bisexual and I need you to respect that.” The Conversation There may be some people, especially authority figures, who you feel merit a more formal conversation (before you bring a date to the company event, for example). Think about what you’d like to say and maybe write some notes down for yourself. While working for the state of Colorado, I found that many people made assumptions about my sexuality. I worked slowly to rectify these assumptions in one-on-one conversations, often by casually mentioning an ex or explicitly saying, “I’m bisexual.” I even once blurted it out to the Lieutenant Governor, who oversaw our office. It wasn’t my most gracious moment, but the ambiguity of some people knowing and others not felt overwhelming. I just wanted everyone to know already. But if you want to be out to only a few colleagues, go for it. Just make it clear to those folks that you are not out to everyone at the office and that you’d like them not to disclose your identity to anyone else. Answer Only the Questions You Want to Answer Depending on your work environment, you may find that many people are accepting and curious about your sexuality. While it’s a compliment to know that others are interested in you, curiosity can turn into prying. Decide in advance how much you want to share and stick to your boundaries. It’s always okay to say, “That’s a very personal question and I don’t think it’s appropriate for the workplace.” It’s always okay to say, ‘That’s a very personal question and I don’t think it’s appropriate for the workplace.’ Your colleagues may also start seeing you as their resident queer expert and want to ask you about everything queer under the sun. I’ve learned to answer questions I feel my colleagues have asked in good faith, if I have time. When I’m too busy? I remind them that we live in an age of unfettered access to information and suggest they ask the internet instead. And when questions are an invitation to a debate, rather than a thoughtful inquiry so that someone might get to know me better, I don’t take the bait. Instead, I suggest the individual do some reading by writers who are bisexual. Know Your Rights While you shouldn’t have to brace yourself for being discriminated against, you have every right to fight for your place in the world if you’re not treated fairly. And, the workplace is no different. So before you come out, research your company policies and city and state laws in terms of sexual and gender identity protections. While policies will vary company to company, some cities and states have explicit laws to protect employees from employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. The Human Rights Campaign has compiled a list of resources for LGBTQ employees that you may want to review prior to coming out. While you shouldn’t have to brace yourself for being discriminated against, you have every right to fight for your place in the world if you’re not treated fairly. And, the workplace is no different. Discrimination in the workplace can take many forms, including but not limited to being passed over for promotion, being fired, having your office vandalized, and experiencing physical or verbal abuse. If you face discrimination due to your sexual identity, consider seeking professional legal advice. (Here are some resources from Lambda Legal you can start with.) If you’re harassed in any way- such as if people are making overly sexual comments or consistently questioning your sexuality- document it, and consider filing a complaint with human resources. If you have a supportive supervisor, ask for their assistance. It can be intimidating to take action- most of us just want to do our jobs and live our lives- but I can tell you from personal experience that it can also be incredibly healing to confront people who are abusing their power. I’ve found that being out has allowed me to more fully engage with my work, connect to colleagues and clients who are LGBTQ+, and envision a career for myself that not only allows me to be out, but also provides me the opportunity to market myself as being bisexual. And I can’t stop thinking about the colleague who told me how much it meant to her that I was out. She looked at me as if I were some kind of hero, as if my decision made her world better. So I certainly don’t regret my choice. But remember that you get to control if, when, how, and to whom you come out. Don’t feel pressured by friends, family, colleagues- or even articles like this one. No one can decide what’s right for you except you. The choice is in your hands, because coming out can only be liberating if you do so of your own free will.

Traveling with other AmericansIt’s understandable to want to share an experience with other people.
