An Audible ad greets you as you exit from the train station One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of L abor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leader ship position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Trademarking Your Label Name
Trademarking Your Label NameTrademarking Your Label NameIf your record label is a registered geschftlicher umgang, then your label anthroponym is your trade name. According to the Small Business Administration, atrade name is an official name under which a company does business. It also is referred to as a DBA, or doing business as name, fictitious name, or assumed name. When youre operating a business that offers a similar service as competitors, the rules for copyrighting that trade name might surprise you. Trade Names and Copyrights Trade names are bedrngnis officially protected under copyright law, so someone could start a record label using the same name as yours. As the SBA puts it, A trade name does not afford any brand protection or provide you with unlimited rights for the use of that name. That might sound a little scary, but most record labels will not meet the requirements for qualifying for a trademark. A trademark is a branding of a service or product that you can p rove to be unique from what other companies are offering. There is very little room to do that as a record label. Unless youve invented a new recording technique or invented a different way for pressing physical album copies, your record label isnt doing anything unique. However, just because you probably wont be able to trademark your record label name doesnt mean there arent things you can do to keep your label branding strong. Obviously, youll have a website with a domain name that matches your label name as closely as possible, but it might be worth buying a few domain names that are really close, like the .net or .org versions. Build a Unique Brand Have a label logo and a distinct set of catalog numbers for your products. Always promote your label along with your new releases and create social media accounts with your unique logo and personality or voice. Whats more, get your artists to be brand ambassadors who represent the face of your label. Make building your record lab els identity a priority in case someone else does come along and think up the same name or tries to infringe on your success by choosing a similar name. The more established you are, the less likely someone is going to be successful with the idea of ripping off your name. Anyone serious about establishing their own business will realize that they are much better off building their own label brand. Applying for a Trademark While trade names are not protected under copyright law, other intellectual property, such as company logos, can be protected as a trademark. For example, the script Coca-Cola with extended lines coming from both Cs is a company logo that is trademarked. In the event that you are going to apply for a trademark for your company logo, understand the proper steps to take. Applications can be filed online relatively quickly at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website. Before filling out the paperwork, you should search the USPTOs database to ma ke sure no other companies have already trademarked a similar logo. You also must determine your basis for filing, which means determining if you are seeking to protect property that already is in use in commerce or if you are seeking to protect property that you have an intent to use. Note that intent is defined as more than just a preliminary idea. It should be market ready. Depending on which basis you choose, youll be expected to provide dates for when the protected property first was used. From there, you should be prepared to fill out the paperwork online, but working with an attorney is highly recommended when going through the process. The USPTO will likely take several months to approve or deny your application. Legal Advice and Record Labels Of course, you should seek advice from a legal professional in any business matters where youre not sure of the law, or if you think someone is trying to steal your intellectual property or ideas. Ideally, your legal expert is fami liar with the specifics of the recording industry and is up to date on current rules and regulations.

This is how you can tackle big, scary goals in your career and life
This is how you can tackle big, scary goals in your career and lifeThis is how you can tackle big, scary goals in your career and lifeI learned to tackle big scary goals as I grew up on a remote cattle ranch in Wyoming. Our ranch house was located at the bottom of a canyon, cut deep into the earth over the years by the North Laramie River.Several times a year my Dad climbed the steep south mountain of the canyon to visit an elderly neighbor woman named Sophie. The cliffs of the canyon rose 1,000 feet on either side of the ranch house, covered with boulders and littered with the debris from an occasional landslide. When I turned eight, Dad relented and allowed both my brother and me to climb with him on one of his visits to Sophie. He had bedrngnis heard from her for a while and she had no telephone. Confused and alarmed, I wondered how we would stick to the rocks and not anliegen off.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Jo b Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHe told me not to worry about how we would tackle that big scary goal as I looked up from the bottom to the top of the mountain. Instead, he told me to keep my eyes on the few feet of mountain in front me so I could find places to put my hands and feet. We would use those crevices to pull ourselves up. Steps that led upward would reveal themselves as we got closer.Even though the mountainside looked sheer from the bottom, there were lots of crevices and places to climb once we got started. They were invisible from below, lost in the grandeur of the larger view.I broke down my goal into small steps to be taken one at a time. I was successful and able to reach the top.If you take too much time to contemplate the huge distance between where you are now and where you want to end up, theres a risk youll never tackle big scary goals. This is how you can tackle big scary goals1. Start backwards from your goalThis discipline helps us think about the obst acles that well meet along the way. It helps us to think about the barriers well need to break, customers well need to contact, or product we need to refine if we want to be successful. Most of us start with the goal we want to achieve, and while this can give us vision, it often does nothing to help us understand and acknowledge the challenges well meet along the way. Vision is vital but once we have that, its helpful to backtrack from that vision to see how we might get tripped up by a variety of things. Ego, competition, complacency- all are factors we need to anticipate so we can recognize them if/when they rear their ugly head. With each step up the mountain with Dad and my brother, I looked around to see how Id be able to descend in a safe and timely manner. It gave me confidence that I knew how to conquer the obstacle in front of me.How To Make It Work For You While it may sound pessimistic at first, always anticipate what can and could go wrong. Work backwards from the best ca se scenario and build in safeguards so youre prepared if things take a turn for the worse.2. Work around your brains limited capacityOur brain cannot remember everything.Recent studiesshow that our working memory capacity is limited to five to seven items. Anything more than that is likely to fall out of our brains memory. If we rely on our memory alone, well stop at every task and and ask ourselves, What am I supposed to do next? This is when we get distracted, get off track, or miss a step. When we break down a larger project into smaller steps, it helps us identify what step we need to take next.Too much information can intimidate as well as inspire. When we create mini-goals, we break big scary goals into achievable steps. This helps us understand all the tasks involved as we tackle the big scary stuff so we can create a timeline to get them done. When we create mini goals we chunk the bigger tasks into smaller ones which allows our brain to make connections.Small steps feel safe . Theyre not overwhelming so once were in action, its easier to plot a path forward. How To Make It Work For You Take a closer look at each goal and see what steps are needed to achieve that specific goal. When you break down a huge project into smaller chunks, you can also experience the smaller joys of achievement and progress. Individual steps should be physically written down on your task list or in a checklist. You can refer back to them when you cant remember what comes next.3. Connect goals to behaviorIt isnt enough to want to achieve. To be successful you need to go one step further and take an honest inventory of what will be required of you to make your goal a reality. Even more important, think about how will you sustain it over the long term. The fruchtwein important question you can ask yourself is, Who do I need to become to reach my goals? A person who responds from a place of authenticity will know that they do not need to change who they are, they only need to dig dee per into who that person already is.To connect your goals with behavior, your questions will always start with I need to be someone whoYou fill in the blanks but the answers need to be specific and tied to your goal. When you connect your goal to specific behaviors that will enable you to achieve them, you can chart a clear path for what will be required to tackle big scary goals. How To Make It Work For You Its important that youre able to articulate your specific goals. If you cant, wait until the vision becomes clearer for you. Clear the detritus from your mind and focus on those goals that feed your values and lead to contentment. Everything else is junk to be discarded on your path to personal success. You can reach your goals but you must be willing to engage in the specific actions that will help you achieve them in a consistent manner.4. Set specific goalsIts not easy to get excited about vague goals and objectives. hochschulprofessor and author ofOrganizational Effectiveness , Gary Latham, cites four main reasons why specific goals are so powerfulSpecific goals force us to make a choice to pursue them- and, as a result, help us to identify stuff thats irrelevant. This increases our focus so we can pursue our goal.Specific goals ignite determination, another cornerstone of motivation.Specific goals inspire us to be more persistent since we have a clear idea of what success looks like.Specific goals start our wheels to turn on the strategies necessary to attain them. How To Make It Work For You When we break down a large project into specific goals, it allows us to set specific milestones that keep us motivated to move in the right direction.5. Seek the opinion of others to keep on trackWhen we seek the opinion of others or ask for feedback, we dont admit defeat or succumb to the opinions of others. Instead, the opinion of others provides another perspective on what needs to change. Often, there is a gap between what we think we give to the world and the w ay others see us.In addition, when we seek the council of others, it can help keep us on track. It helps us break out of the tunnelbauwerk vision that can set in when projects take weeks, months, and even years. We may avoid feedback because we dont want negative input. However,in a study of 157 participants, researchers found the followingNegative feedback decreased feelings of competence, but still increased immediate game play.Negative feedback motivated participants to repair their short-term performance.Positive feedback fostered longer-term motivation in the participants. How To Make It Work For YouSeek feedback because it helps to keep you on track and committed to your project.6. Build a timelineDecide when you need to reach your big scary goal if you have the luxury of setting your own deadline. If you do not have that luxury, write the deadline down and then identify how much time you will need to accomplish each step and mini-goal. If youre pressed for time, how much of the work can you assign to others? Think about getting professional assistance if you need it.A timeline can give us clarity which also gives us certainty. After I made it up the mountain, I felt as though I was sitting on top of the world Sophie was there and made us lunch, and then we headed back down. What I learned that day was that its easy to feel overwhelmed when confronted by big scary goals. However, by keeping these steps in mind, you create a way to reach the top.How To Make It Work For You Humans do not like delayed gratification. When we build a timeline, we give ourselves milestones to meet and each one of them can give us the sense of accomplishment we need to remain motivated when we reach them. A timeline is a visual map that helps us get a picture of where we are, where we want to end up, and what needs to be done to accomplish it.This article originally appeared on LaRae Quy.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Four ways to build your perfect personal brand
Four ways to build your perfect personal brand Four ways to build your perfect personal brand We know an internationally successful DJ whoâs also a radiologist in his day job. Having a nine-to-five job doesnât mean you canât get involved in your personal interests. In fact, making your passions part of your personal brand is not only great for keeping your skills sharp and your knowledge base current, itâs a great way to market yourself for engagements and future positions.Burnishing your personal brand is also a huge opportunity to express yourself in ways you donât always get to when youâre at the office. Hereâs how to create a rock-solid personal brand that speaks to you.Keep tabs on what inspires youDonât you love reading about something or attending an event- related to your industry or not- that lights a fire in you thatâs so bright you canât look away? Thereâs nothing like the pull of things that move you to find out more as quickly as possible because you suddenly find them fascinating.Note to self: when this happens, chase that burning fee ling of curiosity, make a mental note and see if you can incorporate it or something related to the topic into how you communicate and what you say.Part of building a brand is building an identity, so you have to know what you love.Share what youâve learned with othersHalf the fun in learning about topics that interest you as your brand evolves is giving others inspiration by spreading the word.An article on The Balance makes a good point: if you have a passion that you want to pursue, itâs not enough to keep it to yourself. Itâs your duty to let others in on what you know. Possible ways to do that: using social media platforms, writing text on and off the web and videos to show people how much you know and âgain exposureâ by doing it.It makes sense- sharing your wealth of knowledge both educates your audience and keeps others coming back to you as an expert on topics youâre passionate about.Telling others what you know on a variety of platforms can help keep you up t o speed on how people communicate with their audience these days, and your interactions with them will show you what they want to learn from you.Do your homeworkKnowing who else is out there and how they work is a strategic way to work toward getting more eyeballs on your brand.A Forbes article tells you how to do your research, asking you to think about how those whoâve achieved what you want have branded themselves, what you can take away from how others are operating (whether theyâre effective or not), and identifying âyour biggest competitorsâ and how theyâre approaching this.Think about it: isnât knowing what youâre up against half the battle? What you choose to do with this information is up to you, but if you want to grow your brand, itâs wise to pay attention to others who are also in your position.Even if you start off slowly, by building it out one platform at a time and focusing your efforts on how to reach people best on each, at least youâll know what those who inspire you are doing.Put yourself out therePeople wonât be able to share in your personal brand if theyâve never heard of you. Make a point to strive for as much exposure as you can, in amounts you can tolerate.Getting out there also wonât waste your time because you can always gain something from networking. So if you donât walk away with an invitation to collaborate with someone new, donât consider it a loss- leaving events with the contact information of a few new peers can still come in handy down the line.Entrepreneur offers insight about being being âvisible and accessible,â saying that staying at your computer at work wonât help you develop your own brand. The piece later says to go to conferences in your field, to answer questions live during video sessions and âinteract withâ audience members, and to have open social media profiles where people can communicate with you directly because this will fortify your brand.Just donât forget to set boundaries and stick to them when it comes to branding. Yes, this is a new outlet for you to have fun showing the world what you care about the most, but remember that offline, you are still a human being with commitments, concerns and hobbies that donât have to involve your audience. How managers can play a roleYou may not have to go this alone. After talking about how itâs really up to people to develop âself-brandsâ (among other insight), Blaise James, Gallup global brand strategist and senior practice consultant, elaborates on how managers can help employees work on theirs in a Gallup interview thatâs part of a series.âBut managers can encourage employees to develop their brands, and they can focus on their own brands and chart their own way through their companies. Your personal brand is more than just words - itâs actions. Live out your principles. Donât pay them lip service. Thatâs something managers can do: lead by example,â he told Gallup.Just keep in mi nd that while managers have the opportunity to play a role in helping you build your brand, if yours focuses more on topics well outside the realm of your employer, your supervisor may not necessarily be involved.Separate whatâs personal from your brandâ¦so you still have a lifeUnless you donât mind people learning more about what you do privately, be sure to keep your personal social media accounts under wraps, and lead your brand with your public ones.Itâs important to seem approachable so people seek you out, but donât be so tied down to your personal brand outside of work that you have no breathing room, like time spent with loved ones and on self-care.

What to Never Put on Your Resume
What to Never Put on Your Resume What to Never Put on Your Resume 4 Here are eight things you should avoid including on your resume: 1. High School Info Even if youâre fresh out of college and lacking additional educational experience, you shouldnât include where you went to high school. If anything, an employer might be more impressed if you went to an Ivy League university. But your local high school? Not so much. Skip high school information and start your educational experience with college, technical schools, or the like. 2. References If an employer is interested in you, theyre going to ask you for references. Thatâs why thereâs really no good reason to add in the line, âReferences available upon request.â Doing so could date your resume- and make you lose out on precious real estate that could be better utilized by adding in extra info in the skills or work experience sections. 3. Personal Info Employers arenât allowed to ask any personal information during a job interview, so why should you offer it up on your resume? Donât include your marital status, sexual orientation, religious or political affiliations, social security number, or anything else that doesnât have a place on your professional resume. 4. Your Age Although you might not explicitly state your age on your resume, there are other ways that you might be revealing how old you actually are. For example, you might include the year you graduated college, or cite job experience thatâs well over 30 years old. While employers canât legally discriminate against a candidate because of their age, thatâs not to say that it doesnât happen. So look through your resume and see if youâve left any telltale signs of how old you are- and get rid of them. 5. Your Home Address Older resume formats often included a header at the top of the page that had the job seekerâs name, address, and contact info on it. But now, thereâs really no reason to include a home address, particularly if you are applying for a remote job. Although some employers might need to know where you live if the job has a location requirement, itâs acceptable to just add the city and state where you reside. Leaving off your address (and other personal info) can also prevent the possibility of identity theft, should your resume wind up where it doesnât belong. 6. A Career Objective The objective of your job application is simple- you want to get hired! Even though career objectives were popular at one time, they arenât really necessary anymore. If you feel that you need one (e.g., youâre changing careers), you can always address that issue in your cover letter. 7. Your Current Business Contacts Letâs say that youâre job searching while still employed. Be sure to not list your current jobâs contact info (such as your work email or phone number) on your resume. Remember, employers can (and do) peruse your email or potentially have access to your voicemail. If you donât get fired outright for the offense (youâre using company property to conduct your job search, and most likely on company time, too), it could cause some serious tension between you and your current boss. 8. Your Personal Email Address All job seekers should have at least two email addresses: one for professional purposes, and a personal one. Applying for a job with the email address luv2crochet@gmail.com or yankeefanforlife@yahoo.com doesnât look professional, and could negatively impact how an employer perceives your job application. So use an email address specifically for job searching; that way youâll never miss an email from a potential employer for a job interview.

How to Write a Winning CV
How to Write a Winning CV How to Write a Winning CV To CV or not to CV? That is the question ⦠well, at least it is for some. If you are pursuing a career in academia, science or possibly a role abroad, knowing the what, when, why and how of a Curriculum Vitae can be essential. Here are some tips to compose an effective CV.What is a CV? A CV is an overview of a persons experience and academic background for the use in a job application. The CV captures your professional and educational credentials and history in a chronological order. It is reviewed by a hiring authority as an initial step in the hiring process to determine if someones background merits an interview. Why use a CV and how does it compare to a resume? Andrei Kurtuy, a resume and CV writing expert, identified a key difference in a blog he authored in February as static versus dynamic content. A resume should be customized to each role and displays qualifications that are of interest based on a specific role. It should be similar to a marketing document that communicate s value related to a specific audience. A CV, on the other hand, is static. It is a historical document that consistently reflects the same background regardless of the role. Here are some additional ways the two documents differ: Work experience in a CV is typically listed in chronological order while resumes are usually in reverse chronological order. The goal of a CV is to show a comprehensive, detailed progression; a resume emphasizes relevant experience done most recently. CVs do not face the same pressure to be one to two pages. They are comprehensive documents that use as much room as is needed to properly cover your background. Finally, resumes err a bit more on the stylized side these days with color and other formatting tactics to add visual interest. CVs, on the other hand, do not require the same emphasis on creative styling or formatting. They should be easy to read, well-organized and well-written.When do I use a CV and when do I use a resume? A CV is the brand standard for many international roles. If you are looking to apply for a position abroad, chances are the request will be for a CV. Domestically, careers in academia or higher education and sciences often ask for a CV. Frequently, a job application will request one or the other. If you are uncertain, it is always OK to ask what is preferred. How do I create a CV? Gather details of your education, academic achievements, research, publications, awards, affiliations and employment history. You begin the document with contact information and follow with academic credentials â" starting with highest level degree earned first. Next, list your research and work experience in chronological order (unless directed to list differently). Other qualifications to include are skills, training, research, dissertations, teaching experience, publications, presentations/speaking engagements, grants, fellowships, awards and honors. You should also add any professional licenses, certifications or memberships.Re member that a CV is professional correspondence, so it merits meticulous editing and review. Be sure to use proper grammar, punctuation, formatting and pay close attention to consistency in layout and style. The use of bullet points versus complete sentences and paragraphs can be very effective in managing attention and minimizing extra content. You can also create an addendum to support very long lists of publications, speaking engagements or awards if needed. It is also important to avoid including any prohibited information based on the hiring laws in the geography where you are applying. For example, omit age, ethnicity, marital or family status and salary information for any roles in the United States. Also, reserve names and contact information of references for when it is requested. There is no need to include references on your CV.In summary, a well-written CV gives a comprehensive overview of how your background and qualifications make you an ideal candidate for a role. To w rite a good one, first gather and organize all relevant materials. Next, create a well-written, well-edited document with an easy-to-read format. And finally, submit your CV on a timely basis and possibly through a referral to get the process started for your next role in higher education, scientific research or abroad.

Common Characteristics of Millenial Professionals
Common Characteristics of Millenial Professionals Common Characteristics of Millenial Professionals Millennials, or members of Generation Y (also known as Gen Y) were born between 1982 and 2000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 83.1 million millennials in the U.S., and the Pew Research Center found that millennials surpassed baby boomers (boomers) to become the largest living generation in the United States in 2016. Millennials are separated from the older generation before them (Generation X) and the generation that followed them (Generation Z). Millennial Characteristics As expected by their birth years, the Millennial generation makes up the fastest growing segment of the workforce. As companies compete for available talent, employers simply cannot ignore the needs, desires, and attitudes of this vast generation. As with each generation that preceded it, Millennials have come to be defined by a set of characteristics formed mainly by the world and culture they grew up in. Here are a few of their common characteristics. Millennials are Tech-Savvy Generation Y grew up with technology, and they rely on it to perform their jobs better. Armed with smartphones, laptops, and other gadgets, this generation is plugged in 24/7. They like to communicate through email, text messaging, and whatever new social media platform (i.e., Twitter, Instagram) friends and colleagues are using. This is a generation that cant even imagine a world without the internet or cell phones. Millennials Are Family-Centric The fast-track lifestyle has lost much of its appeal for millennials. The members of this generation are willing to trade high pay for fewer billable hours, flexible schedules, and a better work/life balance. Although older generations may view this attitude as narcissistic or see it as a lack of commitment, discipline, and drive, Millennials have a different idea of workplace expectations. Millennials usually prioritize family over work, and even those who arent married with children feel the need to be a part of a family and spend time with nieces, nephews, and siblings. Millennials Are Achievement-Oriented Nurtured and pampered by parents who didnt want to make the mistakes of the previous generation, millennials are confident, ambitious, and achievement-oriented. They also have high expectations of their employers, tend to seek new challenges at work, and arent afraid to question authority. Generation Y wants meaningful work and a solid learning curve. Millennials are Team-Oriented While growing up, most Millennial boys and girls participated in team sports, playgroups, and other group activities, whether it was soccer or ballet. They value teamwork and seek the input and affirmation of others. Millennials are the true no-person-left-behind generation, loyal and committed. They want to be included and involved. Generation Y Craves Attention Generation Y craves feedback and guidance. They appreciate being kept in the loop and often need frequent praise and reassurance. Millennials may benefit greatly from mentors who can help guide and develop their talents. This is where the boomers come in handy because (though mostly retired), they have something to offer and see mentoring millennials is one way they can continue to contribute to the workforce. Generation Y Is Prone to Job-Hopping A potential downside of Generation Y workers is that theyre always looking for something new and better. Its not uncommon for a millennial to stay with a firm for only two or three years before moving on to a position they think is better. The resumes you receive from millennial job seekers will undoubtedly demonstrate this peppered job history. Donât discount members of this generation just because theyâve worked for several firms- these young employees bring with them a variety of experiences. Unlike previous generations, they do not take a job and then hold onto it for as long as humanly possible. Instead, they go out and create a new app or fund a trendy start-up. The Bottom Line About Millennials Generation Y possesses many characteristics that are unique in comparison to past generations. They tend to be excited about their jobs, and they will work hard and efficiently. They might approach their superiors as equals more so than previous generations, but companies can take steps to draw a line between supervisor and friend. When that line is drawn, millennials will not only work tirelessly for you, but they will show you the respect due to a supervisor with many years experience.

How to Come Out as Bisexual at Work - The Muse
How to Come Out as Bisexual at Work - The Muse How to Come Out as Bisexual at Work âIâm glad that you write about being bisexual,â a colleague said to me over beers one recent evening. She shared that she hasnât been out to anyone at work in years and how that decision had been unintentional, but also made her feel incomplete. âBut,â she said, âthe way you talk about your sexuality makes me feel like I can be out.â Before that moment, I hadnât known that my colleague-turned-friend was bisexual. Without even meaning to, without ever knowing she was waiting for it, Iâd created space for her to be her, just by being me. My path to being out at work hasnât always been easy. When I was first hired at one organization, before I was out to anyone there, I was interviewed to be featured in an article for my organizationâs publication. As I spoke about how my commitment to social justice was connected to my bisexuality, the interviewer seemed confused. The next day I got an email saying the piece wouldnât run. Her explanation was flimsy. It felt like an excuse. Coming out in that scenario was certainly a risk and it didnât exactly go well, but I knew that leaving my sexuality out of the equation felt like leaving a part of myself behind. Without even meaning to, without ever knowing she was waiting for it, Iâd created space for her to be her, just by being me. I was disappointed but not entirely surprised. By then Iâd accepted that this was sometimes the cost of being out, particularly as a bisexual person. One recent study noted that bisexual+ people- a term referring to the collection of identities that includes bisexual, queer, sexually fluid, and other non-monosexual folks- experience double discrimination from both queer and straight communities. Furthermore, the authors note that bisexual people âare at higher risk for poor mental health outcomes compared to heterosexual as well as lesbian and gay individuals.â The costs of erasure of and discrimination against bisexual+ people in the workplace, to infer from the research, might include a decrease in mental and physical wellness, lowered productivity, high turnover rates, and compromised morale. While many people donât come out in the workplace, and for good reason, Iâve found that being open about my sexuality has helped me feel more connected to my work and colleagues. If youâre passionate about your organization or your field, you may be spending a significant portion of your time with these people. And I knew that I wanted my colleagues to understand that my bisexuality is a part of me and that being out fuels my work. Since Iâve been out at my most recent job, Iâve listened as co-workers disclosed their sexual identities to me, hosted a queer pride party that my supervisor came to, and felt more fully present at work, even if it makes some conversations more awkward. So yes, coming out as bisexual at work can be risky, but to me itâs totally worth it. And after doing it at 11 different jobs, Iâve learned a few things about what works. Test the Waters If youâre not sure where to begin, you might want to start small. Try indicating your identity in a subtle way to gauge your colleaguesâ reactions. One day while I was working at the admissions office of a small liberal arts college, I decided to wear something a little queer. I donned a black button-down tucked into a black skirt and added the stark white tie my new girlfriend had just given me. Trust me, I looked sharp and felt confident. When I got to work, my supervisor stopped me, looked me up and down, and told me how bold my choice was. Sure, it might have been a throwaway comment, but the way he said it made it clear to me that I was under a magnifying glass- and felt like a sign that my sexuality might not be welcome. I decided I wouldnât be coming out to most of my colleagues, and certainly not to my supervisor, because I didnât know how safe I was. We have every right to exist in a world where our bisexuality is not just accepted, but celebrated. Sadly, though, thatâs not possible in every office. But three years later and two thousand miles away, I stood listening to a co-worker talk about her girlfriend. I had just moved across the country and started working at a small café. I asked my fellow barista about how she met her girlfriend, to which she replied, âThe only place to meet lesbians in this town is online.â âWell,â I said, âwhat if I wanted to meet everybody?â âThereâs a setting for that,â she said and continued extolling the virtues of online dating. I had been afraid to come out, but her simple acceptance of my sexuality in this small gesture made me feel safer to tell the other café staff I was bisexual. What I found was a warm and welcoming community of queer and straight folks, all of whom I had been working alongside for weeks in trepidation. We all deserve to live under a glorious rainbow of love and acceptance. We have every right to exist in a world where our bisexuality is not just accepted, but celebrated. Sadly, though, thatâs not possible in every office. You probably already know this, but Iâm going to reiterate it just in case: It is appropriate, and smart, to decide not to come out at work if you donât feel safe. Prepare and Practice Versions of Coming Out When youâre coming out at work, you donât need to prepare a formal statement, but you donât want to wing it, either. Take the time to think of a few coming out options suited to different audiences or occasions and practice them either on your own or with a trusted friend (who youâre out to!). The Casual Reveal Think of a simple, comfortable way to allude to your sexuality. For example, you can mention your involvement with a bisexual organization. The Clarification If youâre being misidentified as gay or straight on a recurring basis, decide on a quick, clear clarification you feel comfortable using- it can be as simple as, âOh, actually Iâm bisexual.â If youâve tried the casual reveal or a clarification already and people continue to misidentify you, you may want to say more strongly, âActually, Iâm bisexual and I need you to respect that.â The Conversation There may be some people, especially authority figures, who you feel merit a more formal conversation (before you bring a date to the company event, for example). Think about what youâd like to say and maybe write some notes down for yourself. While working for the state of Colorado, I found that many people made assumptions about my sexuality. I worked slowly to rectify these assumptions in one-on-one conversations, often by casually mentioning an ex or explicitly saying, âIâm bisexual.â I even once blurted it out to the Lieutenant Governor, who oversaw our office. It wasnât my most gracious moment, but the ambiguity of some people knowing and others not felt overwhelming. I just wanted everyone to know already. But if you want to be out to only a few colleagues, go for it. Just make it clear to those folks that you are not out to everyone at the office and that youâd like them not to disclose your identity to anyone else. Answer Only the Questions You Want to Answer Depending on your work environment, you may find that many people are accepting and curious about your sexuality. While itâs a compliment to know that others are interested in you, curiosity can turn into prying. Decide in advance how much you want to share and stick to your boundaries. Itâs always okay to say, âThatâs a very personal question and I donât think itâs appropriate for the workplace.â Itâs always okay to say, âThatâs a very personal question and I donât think itâs appropriate for the workplace.â Your colleagues may also start seeing you as their resident queer expert and want to ask you about everything queer under the sun. Iâve learned to answer questions I feel my colleagues have asked in good faith, if I have time. When Iâm too busy? I remind them that we live in an age of unfettered access to information and suggest they ask the internet instead. And when questions are an invitation to a debate, rather than a thoughtful inquiry so that someone might get to know me better, I donât take the bait. Instead, I suggest the individual do some reading by writers who are bisexual. Know Your Rights While you shouldnât have to brace yourself for being discriminated against, you have every right to fight for your place in the world if youâre not treated fairly. And, the workplace is no different. So before you come out, research your company policies and city and state laws in terms of sexual and gender identity protections. While policies will vary company to company, some cities and states have explicit laws to protect employees from employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. The Human Rights Campaign has compiled a list of resources for LGBTQ employees that you may want to review prior to coming out. While you shouldnât have to brace yourself for being discriminated against, you have every right to fight for your place in the world if youâre not treated fairly. And, the workplace is no different. Discrimination in the workplace can take many forms, including but not limited to being passed over for promotion, being fired, having your office vandalized, and experiencing physical or verbal abuse. If you face discrimination due to your sexual identity, consider seeking professional legal advice. (Here are some resources from Lambda Legal you can start with.) If youâre harassed in any way- such as if people are making overly sexual comments or consistently questioning your sexuality- document it, and consider filing a complaint with human resources. If you have a supportive supervisor, ask for their assistance. It can be intimidating to take action- most of us just want to do our jobs and live our lives- but I can tell you from personal experience that it can also be incredibly healing to confront people who are abusing their power. Iâve found that being out has allowed me to more fully engage with my work, connect to colleagues and clients who are LGBTQ+, and envision a career for myself that not only allows me to be out, but also provides me the opportunity to market myself as being bisexual. And I canât stop thinking about the colleague who told me how much it meant to her that I was out. She looked at me as if I were some kind of hero, as if my decision made her world better. So I certainly donât regret my choice. But remember that you get to control if, when, how, and to whom you come out. Donât feel pressured by friends, family, colleagues- or even articles like this one. No one can decide whatâs right for you except you. The choice is in your hands, because coming out can only be liberating if you do so of your own free will.

6 glaring travel snafus Americans make abroad (and how to avoid them)
6 glaring travel snafus Americans make abroad (and how to avoid them) 6 glaring travel snafus Americans make abroad (and how to avoid them) Travel season is upon us. With the post-memorial day afterglow fading, and flight prices escalating, many find themselves scrambling to solidify those ever elusive travel plans. Based on recent trends, travelers are overlooking the superficially appealing siren call of the âall-inclusive cruiseâ and opting for the allure of the unknown. More and more Americans are trading in their package vacation deals for improvised backpacking trips across Europe, volunteer excursions, and niche expeditions.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Americans tourists have long warranted a rather taboo reputation when traveling abroad. Perhaps the most commonly held representation characterizes them as loud-mouthed and culturally uninformed. Whether or not this taboo is rightfully applied is up to interpretation. However, after having lived in Eastern Europe for over a year, Iâve come to not ice American tourists tend to be most apparently culpable of a few traveling faux pas in particular:1. Staying in hotelsHotels have had their moment of glory. This was long before travelers favored experience to comfort. Opting for an unorthodox means of accommodation is not only financially appealing, but it also offers an immersive experience you may not get by staying in a hotel. The obvious substitute? Airbnb. Now, over 80% of millennials claim they favor Airbnb for its ability to provide unique travel experiences that to offer a more âlocalâ experience. Airbnb offers the same security of staying at a hotel but within the intimacy of a localâs home. Airbnb is an obvious choice for those monitoring their budget and favoring privacy. For those looking to take âcultural immersionâ to the extreme, Couchsurfing.com is a niche alternative, principally among a younger subset of travelers. This is a site where hosts offer a couch or shared living space, completely free of charge . The catch? The host comes with the space. Locals who host out their home to guests are looking to have a cultural exchange by getting to know travelers from all over the world. So, if stability and comfort are your accommodation prerequisites, Couchsurfing may not be for you.2. Not learning the fundamentals of the language of the country theyâre visitingEnglish may currently be the universal language of choice, but this is no excuse for not adopting the fundamental jargon of the country youâre visiting. Knowing common expressions not only serve a practical purpose, but they can also warrant respect from locals (even if youâre delivery is imperfect). Luckily, we exist in a time where there is an abundance of apps that offer basic lessons on the language of your choice. So if packing lightly is your priority, you can scrap the travel books altogether and opt for one of the many language applications on your smartphone. Duolingo is widely popular, noted to be both entertaining and effective. If youâre more of a reading traditionalist and swear by paperbacks, there are a plethora of language pocketbooks on the market designed to be both concise and accessible. Veterans of travel guides, Lonely Planet offers a series of cartable phrasebooks for every language imaginable.3. Not reading up on currency ratesIf you can garner a single piece of useful information from this section, let it be that airport exchange offices should be avoided at all costs (no pun intended).Itâs easy to be seduced by the convenience of the exchange office - they are aptly placed near the arrivals gate and itâs understandably tempting to want to have cash on hand before heading into the city. But, like all things that seem too good to be true, exchange offices reap off this allure of convenience and travelersâ naivety of local currency rates. You may wonder how youâll even get to your destination within the city without cash on hand. Today, nearly every airport public trans port vendor accepts debit or credit card payments. You can easily buy a bus or train ticket that transports you to the city center. Once you arrive, there is typically an assortment of exchange offices that offer a fair exchange rate. Iâve personally found that exchange offices near domestic bus stations tend to have the best deals, as they cater to locals.Of course, itâs essential to research the currency rate of the country youâre visiting beforehand, as well as the locations of the best exchange offices within the city center. Take advantage of the age of the smartphone by downloading a currency exchange app. This is a surefire way to verify an exchange officeâs alleged claim to a good price.4. Not taking advantage of public transportBe warned: tourists are the taxi driverâs cash cow. Once youâve touched down in a foreign city, itâs tempting to jump into the first taxi cab you find to get you to your destination. If a traveler appears to be non-local, taxi drivers w ill exploit their presumed lack of knowledge of the currency rates, and charge an exorbitant fee. This is why, if itâs available, always opt for public transport. Today most all cities, especially within Europe, boast well-connected and efficient metro lines. Airport information centers always carry free basic subway maps that make navigating the subway system a breeze. Because most of the United States is so dependent on cars, American tourists may not realize just how operative European subway systems are. In some cities, particularly within Eastern Europe, a traveler can make their way through the entirety of a city not spending more than $10 USD a day.5. Packing too many cities into one trip instead of spending time in one placeI believe the Publilius Syrus proverb âTo do two things at once is to do neither,â must have originally been reserved for the over-ambitious traveler. If youâre like most working Americans, you most likely donât have limitless Paid Time Off. Thatâ s why, when traveling abroad, some may feel inclined to overstuff the time they do have with an array of destinations. A rigid agenda is beneficial for a lot of things in life; this isnât necessarily the case when traveling. In fact, Iâve found that the more destinations in a given trip, the less Iâve truly enjoyed my time spent within them. The most rewarding trips to be the ones dedicated to a single country or specific region. Itâs only once you free yourself from an agenda that you begin to fully recognize the little cultural nuances of a region that canât be found in a guidebook or group tour. There is a rising trend in embracing this âslow travelâ mentality - the antithesis to destination stuffing. Slow travel embraces the idea of connecting with a place on a deeper level, rather than rushing from one attraction to the next. A major incentive for some is how much more sustainable slow traveling is compared to traditional vacations. Slow travelers embrace alterna tive modes of transport from bikes, trains, cars, and, at times, their own two feet.6. Traveling with other AmericansItâs understandable to want to share an experience with other people. Whether this is a significant other, a close friend or large group of friends, thereâs no doubt that traveling with others can make a trip more entertaining. This isnât an argument against traveling with Americans altogether. Rather, I hope to shed light on the notably different kind of experience you can have traveling alone.Solo travel can seem intimidating for those who havenât yet experienced it. Yet, doing so opens the door to opportunities you would never have been presented with if you were traveling with other Americans. For one, you are completely dependent on yourself. This is at once discomforting and empowering. You alone are responsible for how youâll navigate your way to your destination, where your next meal will be, and who you choose to spend your time with. The latter is on e of the greatest rewards of solo travel. The people you meet abroad enhance your experience of a place. Traveling with a group of friends, youâre naturally far less likely to strike up a conversation with locals, or other international travelers. The bottom line is, when traveling, donât be afraid to seek discomfort. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
