The Highest-Paying Job in Every State Anesthesiologist is the highest-paying job in America, on average â" but itâs only the top-paying profession in 17 states. We sifted through the US Bureau of Labor Statisticsâ Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates survey to find out who are the highest-earning professionals in each state and Washington DC. The survey, which reflects May 2016 salary and employment data, found that medical jobs topped all states in terms of pay. Here are the highest-paying jobs in all 50 states and DC: Alabama: Orthodontist Average annual pay: $287,250 Orthodontists examine, diagnose, and treat dental malocclusions and oral cavity anomalies.
